Two thirds of the country territory is covered by mountains and low lands in North and South-East.
The main mountains are: Rila, Pirin, Vitosha, Rhodopes and the Balkan mountain range (Stara Planina) that divides the country in two Northern and Southern Bulgaria.

Rila is one of the most beautiful mountains of Bulgaria. There are more than 150 lakes at an altitude from 2100 to 2500 m. The highest lake is the highest one on the Balkan Peninsula and lies at 2, 786 m at the foot of Musala. The hottest mineral spring with temperature of 102 C is located at Sapareva Banya resort. The resorts for sport and recreation in Rila are: Borovetz, Govedartzi, Yakoruda, Sapareva Banya. With endless pine-tree forest, nice lakes and meadows full with flowers in the summer and a large number of possibilities for skiing in the winter.

Sredna Gora Mountains are situated in the central part of Bulgaria, between the Balkan Range and the Thrace plain. The highest peak is Bogdan - 1604 m. The Sredna Gora Mountains give rise to the rivers Topolnitza, Luda Yana, Pyasuchnik, etc.
The Sredna Gora Mountains are famous for the mineral springs in Hisarya, Pavel Banya, Strelcha, Banya, Stara Zagora.

Vitosha Mountain with its lovely skyline rises on the outskirts of Sofia. The highest peak is Cherni Vruh - 2290 m. Vitosha gives rise to numerous rivers - the Struma, Boyana, Dragalevtzi, Vladaya, etc.
All the year round both residents and guests of Sofia choose it as their favourite place for sport and recreation.

Pirin is the second highest mountain in Bulgaria after Rila. Yet the number of peaks, higher than 2000 m is bigger than that in Rila. The highest peak is Vihren - 2914 m. Pirin rises majestically in the South-Western part of Bulgaria between the rivers Mesta and Struma. The Pirin region is famous for its mineral springs which have been used for balneotherapy since antiquity to the present day. Some of them are in Sandanski, Dobrinishte, Banya, Marikostenovo, etc.

The Rhodopes are exclusively impressive with their mixed forests, rounded peaks and picturesque canyons. The most beautiful among the canyons is the Trigrad one. Snezanka and Yagodina are one of the most attractive caves of Bulgaria.
The mountain is not very high and quite pleasant for tourism. The highest peak is Perelik - 2191 m. The Rhodopes have two main parts - Western and Eastern. The resorts for recreation, treatment and skiing here are: Velingrad, Pamporovo, Chepelare, Peshtera, Assenovgrad. Our itinerary passes by way of several middle-height peaks, a number of unique natural phenomena, small cosy villages, old roman roads, cultural monuments.

The Balkan Range (Stara Planina) is the biggest mountain on the Balkan Peninsula, spread throughout Bulgaria from the Belogradchik Pass in the West to the Emine cape (the Black Sea) in the East. Its highest peak is Botev - 2376 m.
It intersects the country lengthwise and forms many dips, valleys, hollows and canyons. The most beautiful one is the Iskur canyon. The Balkan Range gives rise to many rivers - Lom, Ogosta, Nishava, Malki Iskur, Vit, Ossum, Vidima, Rositza, Yantra, Toundja, Luda Kamchia.
